Magnificent Volcanic Eruption in Iceland near Reykjavik
We offer helicopter tours where you can experience this magnificent natural phenomenon from above. When the volcano is active, you can witness the splashing, scorching lava, and when it is inactive, you can admire the newly formed black lava and even peek into the crater. Due to high demand, it is important to book your tour well in advance.
The Volcano in Iceland has been ON and OFF since 2021
On March 19, 2021, a peaceful and beautiful volcanic eruption began in Iceland, in the Geldingadalir valley near the Fagradalsfjall volcano, and later in the same area near Merardalir. There have been "on & off" eruptions in the area several times since. Volcanic experts predict that this will continue for several years to come.
Activities Iceland offers helicopter tours to see the area.
We cannot predict when the volcano will be active or inactive. When the volcano is inactive, you can experience the newly formed lava, the volcano itself, and possibly some smoke. The volcano in Iceland has been 'ON & OFF' since 2021, and experts predict that this will continue for several years to come. Whether the volcano is active or inactive, it is always a dramatic and impressive sight.
Please note that when the volcano is active, seats sell out very quickly.
The area is located close to Iceland's capital, Reykjavik (about 30 km away), and near the Blue Lagoon and Keflavik Airport. This area has been very active for thousands of years, although it has been more than 800 years since the last eruption. The eruptions on Reykjanes have been typically harmless "shield volcano eruptions" (basaltic shield volcano eruptions), where the lava flows in a steady, slow stream without major explosions, allowing you to get very close if you wish.
We now offer helicopter tours to see the volcano and the newly formed lava on the Reykjanes Peninsula. This is a truly unique experience with fantastic views of the volcano, the lava, and the surrounding area. On this tour, you will witness the power of Mother Earth up close.
We depart from Reykjavik, and the helicopter tour itself takes about 30–40 minutes round trip.
This is a truly unique experience that you should not miss when traveling to Iceland today.
Please note:
- We only have 2 helicopters, so there are only 5–6 seats in each helicopter. Therefore, you must book well in advance as demand is high.
- We do not fly in bad weather or if there is too much gas in the air over the volcano.
